Hebrew Codification: The Language of Law and the Language of Equality
Shulamit Almog
The main argument of this essay is that the Civil Law Bill uses gender-charged language unnecessarily and by choice. On both the practical and conceptual levels, the use of the masculine form in general is incorrect and inappropriate because of its negative consequences. The purpose of this article is to offer a number of linguistic options that provide a solution to this problem, and to single-handedly redesign a legislative language that expresses the value of gender equality. The civil code bill poses an opportunity to derive considerable benefit from a relatively modest linguistic change – an opportunity that should not be missed.
